I think the most likely explanation is that it was a hyena, based on its hunting and attack habits, as well as its described appearence, and that its abilities and appearence were blown out of proportion by the widespread fear at the time. Perhaps it was a lycanthrope, based on its reputed ability to fight against peasents with human-like tactics and attacks. Perhaps it was a demon, based on its reputed ability to survive gunshots.to the head. What do you think?
