DNA amplification by PCR question?

If the covalent bonds between the nucleotides were to be broken, you would no longer have a piece of single-stranded DNA, you would just have a bunch of free nucleotides. This would destroy the order of the bases and leave nothing to be the template for the PCR reaction.
