Hooking up a amp to stereo?

ok i just got 4 new JBL 6x9's and a pionner indash. i have a 400 watt 2 channel. A friend told me i could amp my speakers to sound better. so i know id have to put 2 speakers on each channel but do you hook the amp up with a rca jack like if you were hooking up subwoofers?
