Spanish: The Preterite and the Imperfect.?

Hi, in my spanish 3 cl we are learning the difference between the preterite and the imperfect, but I don't understand at all because I missed cl and our teacher gave us 57 sentences to complete. Can someone please explain to me how to tell when you use the different types?
